It is now the neoliberal organ of choice for those readers who like to think of themselves as mildly inclined towards left-ish views, since it presents a superficially critical viewpoint while ruthlessly excluding opinions that argue for real progress away from the business-as-usual policies of the major parties. It therefore diverts and distracts those readers who would like real change away from the current neoliberal consensus, so undermining and diluting any challenge to this consensus. Comments in the ‘CiF’ section are now ruthlessly policed and, if necessary, censored. The paper’s treatment of Julian Assange, its newfound sycophancy towards US and Israeli policy, and more recently, its regular smears of Jeremy Corbyn exemplify this. So the Guardian’s reporting of the Yemen situation is only one facet of a much more widespread problem . . .
